Maternity And Impact Health Sharing: What Expecting Families Need to Know

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting—and often expensive—milestone for growing families. If you are considering healthcare sharing, the maternity sharing perks of Impact Health Sharing can make a big difference.

Below, we explain how Impact approaches prenatal care, OB/GYN visits, childbirth, and postpartum care so you know what to expect when it’s time to grow your family.

For a broader overview of how Impact works in general, be sure to read Healthcare Sharing Explained: What You Need to Know.

How Maternity Sharing Works at Impact

Eligibility & Waiting Period

  • Maternity expenses are eligible for sharing only after the mother has been an Impact member for a minimum of 10 months.
  • The eligibility is tied to the Estimated Due Date (EDD) documented in your medical record. That EDD must be at least 10 months after your membership start date for the pregnancy to be eligible for sharing.
  • Delivery must be performed by a Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), or a licensed midwife.

What’s Eligible: From Prenatal to Postpartum

When your maternity care is eligible, the Impact community comes together to share a wide range of related costs, including:

  • Prenatal care (regular check-ups, lab/ultrasound visits during pregnancy).
  • Standard delivery costs, whether at a hospital or birth center—including vaginal or C-section births—as long as the delivery is handled by a licensed provider as listed above.
Note: special delivery add-ons are not eligible for sharing. For any questions, call Member
    Services at (855) 378-6777.
  • Postpartum care and any complications for mother and/or child during that same “pregnancy event.”

Because maternity care is typically billed as a single global maternity bill (including prenatal, delivery, postpartum together), Impact expects one comprehensive bill per pregnancy. If you begin care with a midwife and later transfer to a physician—or vice versa—sharing still applies to the one provider who submits the global bill.

Note: If you begin maternity care with a midwife who submits a bill, and you later switch to an OBGYN, a new bill cannot be submitted for sharing. Only one global bill per maternity event is eligible.

Role of OB/GYN, Midwives & Provider Choice

One advantage of Impact is freedom of provider choice: you aren’t limited to a network. If you already have an OB/GYN or prefer a licensed midwife or birthing center, you can keep those choices.

If you opt for a midwife or a birthing center, just be sure the provider is properly licensed, certified, or registered in the state of delivery and that credentials (or license documentation) are submitted with the bills. Without that, any maternity-related expenses may not be eligible for sharing.

Sharing Limits & Important Conditions

  • For any single pregnancy event (regardless of how many babies are involved), sharing is limited to $150,000. This includes antepartum care, delivery, possible complications, and postpartum care.
  • Since maternity care is billed globally, only one bill per pregnancy is eligible.
  • If a newborn is born while a parent is a member, the newborn can be added to the membership effective from the date of birth, provided the parent(s) submits the “Add a Family Member” application within 30 days. Backdating beyond 29 days is not permitted.
  • However, if the mother joined Impact while already pregnant (or too close to the due date), maternity may be considered a “pre-existing” condition. Under those circumstances, maternity bills (including prenatal, delivery, postpartum) will not be eligible for sharing.

What If Maternity Isn’t Eligible?

If for some reason your pregnancy doesn’t meet the waiting-period requirement—for example, you enroll during pregnancy or your EDD is within 10 months of enrollment—then maternity bills won’t be shareable.

That said, bills may still be eligible for repricing depending on your provider’s discretion, and there are cases (like miscarriage care) where certain medical expenses may still be eligible for sharing.

Why Some Families Choose Impact for Maternity

We understand you have choices when it comes to the care of you and your expanding family. Here are some of the reasons choosing Impact Health Sharing at this time might be right for you:

  • Flexibility of provider choice—you may keep your OB/GYN, midwife, or birthing center without worrying about a restricted network.
  • Significant cost-sharing potential—up to $150,000 per pregnancy event provides a meaningful safety net for typical maternity costs.
  • Faith-aligned community model—because Impact is not insurance but rather a healthcare sharing community, many families appreciate the shared values approach. (For more on how Impact works overall, see Healthcare Sharing Explained: What You Need to Know.)

Things to Confirm Before You Enroll

If you’re expecting or planning to start a family soon, here are important questions to review:

  • Is your Estimated Due Date (EDD) at least 10 months after your planned membership start date?
  • Will your OB/GYN or midwife submit one global bill for prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care?
  • Will you have the ability to submit the “Add a Family Member” form for your newborn within 30 days of birth?
  • Are there any pre-existing fetal or maternal conditions documented before you enrolled that might make medical bills ineligible for sharing?

Being clear on these details before enrollment helps avoid surprises later on.

Conclusion

For couples planning to grow their family, Impact Health Sharing offers a compelling option for maternity expenses—from prenatal visits, OB/GYN care, and childbirth to postpartum recovery. With generous sharing limits and freedom to choose your provider, many families find it a supportive alternative to restrictive health insurance.
