What Are Healthcare Sharing Ministries?

Healthcare Sharing Ministries (HCSMs) are member-based, nonprofit communities where individuals and families voluntarily share medical expenses according to clearly defined guidelines.
They are not insurance, and that fact is embedded in the Affordable Care Act.

Key characteristics include:

  • Members contribute monthly “shares,” not premiums

  • Funds are used directly to help pay for member's eligible medical needs

  • Emphasis on transparency, accountability, and ethical stewardship

  • Strong alignment with personal beliefs and community responsibility

  • Explicitly acknowledged and defined in the Affordable Care Act
