Movember

Movember is a global community, partnering with and dedicated to changing the face of men's health since 2003. The mustache represents the symbol of change. The growth of a new mustache leads to conversations about men's health, like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, or mental health.

As men come together, it sparks inspiration which creates a movement, like Movember. Most men don’t like to talk about their health and most often they do not like to see a physician. Movember promotes awareness—leading to happier, healthier and more importantly, longer life.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation reports that prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America. In the United States, 1 out of every 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.

What are some of the symptoms of prostate cancer?

  • A need to urinate frequently; especially at night, sometimes urgently.
  • Difficulty starting or holding back urination.
  • Weak, dribbling, or interrupted flow of urine.
  • Painful or burning urination.
  • Difficulty in having an erection.
  • A decrease in the amount of fluid ejaculated.
  • Pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, pelvis, or thighs.

Most often there are no warning signs of prostate cancer, which is why getting regular checkups is vital. All men should consider routine screenings around the age of 50, but if there is already a family history of cancer, screenings may be suggested earlier. There are two tests that will be used which are simple and typically painless.

What are the risk factors?

  • Family history
  • Genetic factors
  • Race
  • Lifestyle
  • Dietary habits

Like most diseases, when a relative has had prostate cancer, it increases the chances of being diagnosed. The risk is higher if the affected family members were diagnosed before age 65. There are other risk factors for prostate cancer, such as social and environmental, and those that have a lifestyle with a diet of high fat, high processed foods, and high carbohydrate intake. Men who are overweight or obese, are at greater risk of ultimately developing an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Research has shown that in obese men, recovery from surgery tends to be longer and more difficult.

Schedule your annual exam with your physician and find out if it’s time to have the screening done. They should discuss any concerns and inform you of the best time to get checked.

Movember is the only global charity focused solely on men’s health. Their call is to grow a mustache for 30 days, and encourage your friends and family to join you. When someone asks you why you grew a mustache, bring up Movember.

This movement will bring awareness to men’s health and the importance of staying up-to-date on screenings. We can’t wait to see those ‘staches!
